Essay / The Treaty of Versailles - 862
Some major terms of the Treaty of Versailles concerned Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey. The most notable was the treaty signed by Germany. They were forced to sign the War Guilt Clause, placing all responsibility on Germany for starting the war which resulted in Germany having to pay for all damages caused by the Allies subject to losses from the imposed aggression of Germany and its allies. . Germany considered this too harsh. In addition to the guilt clause, the German army and territory were reduced by the treaty. Limiting the Germans to what they had in terms of military strength helped reduce the chances of Germany "starting" another war. His army is reduced to 100,000 men. The German navy was also reduced, and to top it all off, Germany had to eliminate its air force. The German army was not the only one to be affected. Germany also suffered many territorial losses. He had to return Alsace and Lorraine to the French and some sections of Prussia to the new Polish state. He had to establish about 30 miles from east to west as demilitarized zones. Germany was stripped of its weapons and/or fortifications in order to protect France from any future German movements. Germany was extremely angry but nevertheless accepted the treaty and dictated peace. After David Lloyd George, the Prime Minister of Great Britain, wanted to ensure that Germany would pay for this terrible war. He formulated his election program on the assumption that he would ensure that Germany was punished. France's main objective was to ensure national security. France felt it had suffered the worst of the war because it was at the forefront of German attacks. This led France to want to protect itself against the possibility of attacks in the future. In order...... middle of paper ......n Austrian claims. And Russia for its mobilization of its troops which gave the Germans a pretext to mobilize theirs. I would maintain the reduction of German troops and armaments to discourage any enthusiasm for going to war in the near future. I don't think I would agree with the Germans operating their own mines so that another country would take all their profits, forcing Germany to be unable to pay its workers, which would starve its population. This would be less harsh on the Germans, which I firmly believe would have helped discourage World War II. Germany would have been much less humiliated if the other factors equally shared responsibility and received their sanctions. I have heard it said that a generation that gets a beating is usually followed by the one that inflicts a beating. Germany was defeated, leading them to seek revenge..
