The Zodiac once said: "I like killing people because it's so much fun." The detective novel's author, Robert Graysmith, said that the Zodiac "committed murders simply out of savage rage" (3). Over 40 years ago, many shocking murders were committed in California and to this day the killer has never been found. These shocking crimes frightened many people, outside of just the San Francisco area (Haugen 2). People have formed conspiracies to find out who the killer could be, but no one has been able to reveal the mystery man. The main questions that surface about the Zodiac Killer are who is responsible for the murders, why would anyone kill such innocent people, and how did the killer go unnoticed for so many years. Unlike many serial killers, the Zodiac Killer wanted to be in the public eye and not in the dark. Tragedies were committed and people were brutally murdered, but these crimes never fell into the hands of federal jurisdiction. A subliminal device and a prestigious profession concealed the identity of the Zodiac Killer, or the profile of a monstrous police officer. For starters, the Zodiac Killer claimed to have killed thirty-seven people, but only seven were related to him. Known victims include David Faraday, Betty Lou Jensen, Darlene Ferrin, Mike Mageau, Cecelia Shepard, Bryan Hartnell and Paul Stine. David was seventeen and Betty Lou was sixteen, both were shot in 1968 and died instantly. Eighteen-year-old Darlene Ferrin and sixteen-year-old Mike Mageau were also shot to death in 1966 in a secluded parking lot, but Mageau survived. In 1991, Mageau identified Arthur Lee Allen as the killer. The police officer who showed Mageau the lineup asked why he had never identified Allen as the killer in the twenty years he was a suspect.
