  • Essay / Auckland, New Zealand Transportation System - 1232

IntroductionAuckland is the largest city in New Zealand. It is the one with the largest population. The population of the city of Auckland is more than 1.5 million people. As we know, cities with large populations lead to high traffic jams. Traffic jams are one of the major problems faced in capitals and large cities in most countries. The increase in growth rate is accompanied by an increasing demand for transportation use. This meets the needs of the community. Auckland Council established an organization known as Auckland Transport. This organization provides and maintains all transportation services, from roads and pedestrian paths to bicycles, parking and public transportation. One of Auckland Transport's functions is to upgrade and develop projects and plans to provide road networks to resolve traffic congestion. One of the largest and current projects managed by Auckland Transport is the Tiverton-Wolverton upgrade. Background From 1920 there was a huge demand for a road linking west Auckland and its south-central suburbs. Wolverton Road was built as an arterial road with many benefits. The side streets along Wolverton Road also connected other areas together. With recent population growth, street upgrades were needed to accommodate an average of 31,400 vehicles per day. With its previous bottleneck design, the Wolverton Road had many congested areas at its main intersection. Auckland Transport participated with Auckland Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) in funding the Tiverton upgrade -Wolverton. Upgrading this busy 2.2km stretch cost $30 million, which will bring many benefits to road users and people living in this area.
