  • Essay / The Drought: Surviving the Dust Bowl - 3418

Introduction: An empty rocking chair sat on a porch. Tattered sheets hung from the windows. A windmill was turning slowly. The hinges of a chicken coop door groaned in the breeze as the door slammed against the frame. Everywhere the eye looked there was dust, no green grass, no wheat fields, just dirt and dust as far as the eye could see. Inside the house, dust seeped through cracks, spreading onto furniture, dishes, food and beds. Even just breathing was difficult as the dust violated the nose and lungs. This irritated the eyes and ears without any relief. There was no way to escape the dust and wind - it was a constant state of filth. A beautiful prairie where Indians hunted, pioneers came to start a new life, and a place that both called home was now in total ruin, worthless. Man and nature, who once worked in harmony, have drifted apart because of this man-made disaster. Constant plowing to earn a fortune while waiting for rain. The forces of nature fought back with strong winds, threatening dark clouds that caused confusion and petrifying fear during a period called the Dust Bowl. Was it the end of the world? But it's not just a story of horrible weather and terrible growing conditions, it's also a story of endurance and perseverance; how people stayed and survived or moved elsewhere. They were the very example of immeasurable toughness and courage, because they lived by faith in God, hope and the three little words “if it rained”. Therefore, this research will provide insight into the lives of the Dust Bowl residents and their recovery during a period of American history known as “The Dirty Thirties.” Learning about the Dust Bowl, the struggles of agriculture...... middle of paper ......
