  • Essay / Discuss the role of memory and recollection in Kazuo...

It has been stated that the application of memory functions in works of fiction that act as a device for reflection on human experience. (Lavenne, et al. 2005: 1). I intend to discuss the role of memory and remembrance in Kazuo Ishiguro's dystopian science fiction novel Never Let Me Go (2005). “Memory, like learning, is a hypothetical construct denoting three distinct but interdependent processes: recording, storage and retrieval” (Brut. 2001: 244). Ishiguro's novel Never Let Me Go depicts memory as the backdrop to the storyline and narrative structure, a moral and ethical tale preluding scientific facts to modern, experimental advances in technology through cloning. It takes place in an "alternate England, late 1990s, where human beings are cloned and bred with the aim of harvesting their organs once they reach adulthood. These “clones” are raised in boarding school-type institutions” (Cusk. 2011). The reader follows the retrospective and episodic accounts of these experiences through a series of flashbacks of the main protagonist and the point of view of "Kathy H" presented at the beginning of the novel as a "thirty-one-year-old caregiver", the only option available to the clones in which they can experience any sense of normal societal life, i.e. employment, their own transportation and housing (Ishiguro. 2005:3). The essence of memory is subjective (Lavenne, et al. 2005: 2). In Never Let Me Go, memories form in "Kathy H's" mind and emanate from her subjective opinions. These relate to her own emotions and prejudices as an outsider, a clone, experienced through the innocence of childhood and the deception of adulthood in the face of the institutions of 'Hailsham' and the 'cottages'.
