Decreased reflexes and reaction times are due to muscle stiffening or loss. As a result, it may be more difficult for them to turn their heads to look for other vehicles to change lanes; and the stiffening of their ankle muscles will prevent them from switching quickly from the accelerator to the brake, which will prevent them from stopping quickly to avoid hitting another vehicle or any obstacle that may be in the road. Additionally, stiffness or weakness in arm muscles may prevent them from “turning the wheel quickly” (“older drivers”), unable to swerve to avoid anything.
