As we entered the third wave, we traded our pens and laptops for keyboards and processors. A single wire connected from a phone line to a modem to your processor puts the whole world in your hands. And you too, in the hand of the world. Political realism is defined as doing what is necessary for survival. You have to rely on yourself, because no one else will look after you. Information warfare has become a tactic widely used by individuals as well as businesses concerned with their own survival, in a world of commerce and politics. Information warfare is a new, innovative and dangerous way to harm your adversaries. When we think about war, the mind is usually bombarded with thoughts of M16s, grenades, and hand-to-hand combat. In this new technological age we live in, war now has a much greater meaning. Information warfare consists of using any type of information to harm your opponent's progress and favor yours. The power of information warfare covers a wide range of uses, from gathering corporate information to personal blackmail. It is used not only by individuals against other people, but also by corporations and even the nation. As the third wave, defined by Tofflers, spreads more widely across the country and the world, we can only expect to see much wider use of these technological tactics, used in the home, workplace and even in international politics. Schwartau's definition of information warfare is "the use of information and information systems as both weapons and targets in conflict"; (Schwartau 12).
