Essay / Counseling Project Evaluation with Intern - 1606
At the beginning of my counseling sessions at the Student Counseling Center, I was unsure of what I would experience as a client, I didn't know not how I would react or what I would disclose during sessions. , and I was nervous about attending counseling sessions. Before my first session, I asked myself why I felt so uncomfortable and nervous about participating in a one-on-one session. Specifically, I remember thinking about how this activity would give me the opportunity to be a client and the experience of participating in a counseling session. I also remember telling myself that I was pursuing a career in consulting, so this experience would be one that I would embrace, instead of viewing negatively. Throughout the six sessions, I found myself journaling my thoughts on how my sessions went, as well as my impressions and comments about my counselor. I found this beneficial in helping me reflect on the information discussed during the sessions, and it also gave me the opportunity to evaluate my advisor and the impact of each session. During the first session with my counseling intern, Sarah, she seemed very relaxed and had great people skills. She frequently used my first name during our discussions and maintained eye contact with me. Initially, I expected her to immediately begin reviewing the paperwork and provide me with a detailed overview of the makeup of the six sessions; instead, she began by introducing herself, provided me with a brief summary of her background, then asked me to fill out an information sheet, and finally reviewed the informed consent document. She made sure to ask me if I had any questions or comments about what had been reviewed so far,......middle of the article......how my behaviors may be understood differently in different contexts; as well as, I learned to be open to approaching situations in new ways. Additionally, it gave me a different view of myself and sparked new responses to some of my more recent experiences. Without participating in these sessions, I probably would not have taken the time to know myself better or address certain issues. Therefore, this experience gave me the courage not to be ashamed of wanting to know myself better or seeking outside help to solve certain problems. Overall, this project helped me see myself more clearly and allowed me to form my own opinions about the counseling experience. Works Cited Peterson, JV and Nisenholz, B. (1999).
