Of more than 2,300 students surveyed at 24 colleges, 45 percent failed to improve their critical thinking in two years and 36 percent in four years. Researchers measured critical thinking using the Collegiate Learning Assessment, which asks students to analyze data and arguments and write an essay on a practical topic using provided source materials.7 » Students must learn to process or discover the information provided to them. They are too used to receiving information and understanding how the person found the solution, it being given in the wrong order. Students must discover the product for themselves and tell the story of how it came to be. If this problem is not resolved, the university dropout rate will continue to grow.
