Essay / Altruism and Service: Personal Experiences - 1643
To understand the concept and meaning of the word altruism, he or she must be able to understand the meaning and concept of selfishness, morals and ethics . Each term represents a person's desire to do what they believe to be ethical. In this article, I will discuss and provide five scenarios describing several occasions in which I performed a good deed to help another person or saw someone else do a good deed to help another person. My understanding of the word altruism is that it means caring about the well-being of others. Almost everyone performs an act of altruism every day, whether the act is big or small. Here are three examples of my opinion on altruism, a person in front of you at the supermarket has twenty cents less to buy a liter of milk and you pay for it, and as you rush out of the store a woman walks behind. you push her grocery cart and stop to hold the door, a person accidentally falls into a lake and a stranger jumps in to save her even though she can't swim. This means that the person risked their life to save another without thinking of their own safety. There are many definitions of the term altruism, and each definition describes different ways in which individuals perceive the appropriateness of their behavior. Some people have argued that altruism has nothing to do with whether an individual performs an act of kindness or goodwill toward others. In fact, many argue that it is impossible for altruism to exist. The reason is: They believe that when people perform an act of kindness, they also have an alternative motivation, whether it is to feel good about themselves, receive something in return, or... middle of paper . .....o to you. Almost everyone has heard or learned that this is the golden rule. Based on my understanding of altruism, I believe it exists to some extent. I also agree with some psychologists who argue that most individuals who perform an altruistic act have alternative motivations, whether the act is to make the person feel good about themselves or because they want to get a pat. behind the back or maybe the person has a guilty conscience. I came to these conclusions after evaluating my own scenarios. In conclusion, I discussed and provided five scenarios describing several occasions in which I performed a good deed to help another person or saw someone else do a good deed to help another person. As I wrote each script, I realized that I was performing most of the acts because I had some sort of feeling.
