Key People: Lincoln Rhyme, once a notorious NYPD "criminal," now a quadriplegic, is brought back to work; Amelia Sachs, daughter of a patrol cop who is the first officer in the first kidnapping, making her involved in the entire investigation; Lon Selitto, Lincoln's former partner; Selitto partner Jerry Banks; Mel Cooper, computer engineering and scientist; Jim Polling, NYPD command chief; Fred Dellray, Commander of the FBI; Dr. Berger, Lincoln euthanasia physician; Thom, Lincoln's aide; Dr. Peter Taylor, Lincoln Spine Physician.Key incidents:1. After learning of a possible kidnapping, Patrolman Amelia Sachs receives a dispatch about a homicide near "Thirty-seventh near Eleventh." She finds a corpse roughly dug in a grave. To protect the premises, it does everything humanly possible to prevent any type of contamination.2. Lincoln Rhyme, former head of the Central Investigations and Resources Division, is persuaded by Lon Selitto and his partner to help investigate the kidnapping. Meanwhile, the "Bone Collector" kidnaps another victim.3. Being a quadriplegic, a person paralyzed due to exhaustion, Lincoln Rhyme wants to commit suicide. He hires Dr. Berger to help him with his suicide.4. Rhyme assembles his forensic team to begin the investigation. On the team, he assigned Amelia Sachs, Mel Cooper, Lon Selitto and Jerry Banks to the case. As they begin the investigation, the bone collector tortures his captive.5. Given the clues left by the scene, Rhyme determines the whereabouts of the captive, known as TJ Colfax. He sends Sachs to the scene before TJ meets his fate. But when she arrives, it is too late. Colfax is found boiled to death by hot steam blown in her face. Through this horrible ordeal, Rhyme, still calm, forces Sachs to conduct his first crime scene investigation. She finds other clues left by the bone collector.6. As the first investigation draws to a close, we see the bone picker scraping the flesh off one of his victims' fingers; polish it to the bone.
