Essay / Racism in Désirée's Father's Baby by Kate Chopin
Desiree's Father's BabyRacismRacism was very evident in this story and also in the period leading up to the American Civil War. Racism is mistreatment or violence against another race. It can also be another race believing they are better than the other race. This short story is about racism during the era of slavery. The story was written on November 24, 1892. This story takes place in southern Louisiana before the American Civil War. Armand's family was obviously created by racial perspectives and social influences. The short story was written at a time when racial prejudice and discrimination were common, primarily in the southern states of America. The community's views of people's personal heritage contribute to a social status that allows people to succeed in their professional and personal pursuits. In the 1850s, this was very common behavior when it came to racial discrimination in the South. The view of white advantages over African American slaves was what was required to maintain control of this civilization. The Civil War in the United States was a war of considerable destruction. It destroyed an entire society. Living in these difficult times where society believed that the only way to maintain their way of life was to create societal moral beliefs. It was based solely on the idea that one race was superior to another race. This story embodies how the author viewed the experiences she had. This story recounts the terrors of slavery before the American Civil War. This story represents the importance of the severity of discrimination and slavery in South Louisiana. The story began as it might have been a fantasy. They seemed like the perfect couple. They were happy and in love. The concluding line of "she... middle of paper... is part of this race." He did not want his family's famous name to be ruined. He was portrayed as a man who had everything. He had a reputation to maintain and Armand, being part black, would have ruined it. He owned a plantation and was a slave master. Racism actually played a major role because when Armand discovered that the baby was mixed, everything changed, like Armand's mood and Désirée's happiness. She seemed very cheerful and happy. Armand was also happy. He was nice to the slaves. After seeing her child become mixed race, it completely changed her attitude. He did not truly love the child because love is unconditional. He was more concerned about the child's race. This was a great short story to read and gave me insight into how important and serious our society was at the time. I'm glad we overcame these terrible racial problems.
