  • Essay / Euthanasia - 1169

Euthanasia is an action resulting in the death of a person. There are four types of euthanasia, namely voluntary active euthanasia, non-voluntary active euthanasia, voluntary voluntary euthanasia and non-voluntary passive euthanasia. Among the four types of euthanasia, voluntary active euthanasia or VAE is the most controversial ethical issue in the United States. It is about the murder of a competent patient who decided to end his suffering by ending his life with the help of the doctor. VAE is illegal in the United States; however, it is morally right. Voluntary active euthanasia is legitimately moral on the basis of Immanuel Kant's human dignity, utilitarianism's greatest happiness principle, and James Rachel's vision of active euthanasia. According to Immanuel Kant, a person has a dignity which makes him autonomous. Thus, the autonomous patient's decision to die has intrinsic value. Because patients are rational agents, they are capable of making their own decision based on reason. A rational patient will think that if the continuation of existence is full of suffering and without hope of better well-being, then the best option is to interrupt one's life to save oneself from this future condition. It is the patient's approach to managing their own life. Dan W. Brock is correct in his article "Voluntary Active Euthanasia" when he says that "self-determination [or autonomy] has fundamental value...[because]...the individual [can] control the manner, circumstances and time of his death. and death” (75). The dignity of the patient lies in his “capacity to direct his life” (Brock 75). According to Stephen G. Potts, a patient may request euthanasia for the benefit of others (79). In his argument against the VAE, the p...... middle of paper ......uffees. Voluntary active euthanasia is legitimately moral. It is morally right for a person to seek euthanasia because it is their freedom or autonomy to control their own life. This ends the patient's suffering without harming others. Additionally, it saves the person from suffering by giving them a lethal injection or medications that prevent them from slowly dying from pain. On the other hand, the arguments against euthanasia are not valid. A thorough evaluation will protect the patient who requests euthanasia for the benefit of others. The patient who requests euthanasia does not use himself as a means but as an end to respect his own humanity. Furthermore, God, as benevolent, will not allow a person who approves of the purpose of euthanasia – to end suffering – to suffer. Voluntary active euthanasia should therefore be legalized in the United States..
