Essay / Significant personal impact in my hometown
Philosophers like Aristotle and Plato emphasized that education is essential to the moral development of individuals and the well-being of the society in which they live. Regarding this idea, I returned to Korea with the intention of making a significant impact in my hometown during the summer after my sophomore year. Having volunteered to help people with disabilities with my parents since a young age, I looked for an institution to be able to continue serving people with disabilities. Fortunately, the people in charge of the establishment welcomed me warmly and gave me a very rewarding job: helping children with intellectual disabilities and teaching them English. Being so young and increasingly inexperienced, I wasn't sure I could be a good assistant and teacher. However, I pushed aside my doubts and decided to believe in myself and do my best. On the first day of volunteering, I was very surprised to see how well the children followed my instructions. Since most of them had never taken an English class before, my lessons focused only on basic concepts, like the alphabet, and simple words, like “apple” and “car.” I thought the children would be bored during my class, but their passion and enthusiasm for learning the new materials proved me wrong as I saw their willingness to learn the new language over time. My initial goal as an English teacher was to have them translate basic sentences, but by the end of that summer, they were able to create their own sentences. I still remember their clear eyes looking at me with enthusiasm at the idea of learning new subjects in a very lively way. I especially remember this kid named Jong Su, who was only about 11 years old when I first met him. Although he suffered from an innate intellectual disability and learned more slowly than most students at the school, he was one of the few children who possessed the most dazzling energy; he participated so well in my classes and always volunteered to answer my questions. I am very happy that I chose to step out of my comfort zone to volunteer at this institution during my summer vacation. My experience as an English teacher and teaching assistant has been invaluable not only to the children, but also to me. Most importantly, looking back, I am now very grateful that I was able to share my knowledge with others, even if it was only temporary. Just as Aristotle and Plato said that education is essential to the moral development of individuals and the well-being of society, I also firmly believe that every child, despite their disability, benefiting from an adequate education will offer a better future to his family and his country. and that he or she has the power to make the world a better place. My service as a teacher and assistant in the institution has positively influenced the children not only on their future but also on their community afterwards.
