Essay / Philately and Philately - 1405
Philately, the study of stamps, differs from stamp collecting, although the two hobbies seem synonymous with each other. However, not all philatelists collect stamps and many collectors accumulate rare stamps without getting involved in the small details behind each commemorative adhesive stamp. Building a comprehensive stamp collection may require basic training in philatelic literature to assess value in its current form. Stamp collectors will accumulate postage stamps for their historical value and unique geographic aspects. Some collectors will be interested in many different subjects depicting various events, ships, animals and authority figures, such as kings, queens, presidents and dictators. Some countries create limited runs of stamps in order to generate a revenue stream based on contributions from stamp collectors. For example, the postage stamps produced by these countries far exceed the actual demand for services; however, the whimsical and topical designs attract postage stamp collectors to add to an ever-expanding stamp album. The most valuable stamps can be found at conventions, private meetings hosted by stamp collecting organizations and associations, garage sales or estate sales, auction houses, and online auction sites. Some popular tools used by philatelists and stamp collectors include: stamp tweezers, a powerful magnifying glass, and a punch gauge.
