There are many types of parents in the world today. Parent types can be classified into many different categories. I believe there are three types of parents today: consultants, helicopters, and drill sergeants. In this essay, I will discuss and explain each of these types of parents. I will also discuss the type of parent I believe I am and how my parenting style might affect my children in the future. Parent Consultants are a loving and logical parent who provides guidance and counseling services to children. They convey messages of personal value and strength and rarely mention responsibilities. Parent consultants show how to take care of yourself and be responsible. They share their personal feelings about their own performance and their responsibilities with their child. Parent consultants provide and help their child explore alternatives and then allow them to make their own decision. They provide the child with a “time limit” to fulfill his or her responsibilities. Parent consultants often use a lot of actions and very few words. They allow their child to experience the natural consequences of life and allow them to play the role of teacher. Helicopter parents fly over their children and save them from the hostile world in which they live. They convey messages of weakness and low personal worth. Helicopter parents tend to make excuses for the child, but complain about the child's responsibilities. They assume responsibilities for their child and protect them from any possible negative feelings. The helicopter parents will make decisions for the child and provide no structure, but will complain to the child saying, "After all I've done for you..." Therefore, in conclusion, there can be many types and styles of parenting today, my classifications for parenting types are three categories: consultant, helicopter, and drill sergeant. Each of these three parenting styles has its positive and negative aspects. I choose to incorporate a mix of each style into parenting and raising my children.
