  • Essay / Gun Control and Why We Shouldn't Have It - 1098

“Guns are not the problem. We are the problem” (Kieta Shimizu). When it comes to gun control, many arguments can undoubtedly be made for both sides of the coin. In this essay you will hopefully learn why we do not need gun control in the great country that is the United States of America. Three main topics will be covered: the effects of private gun ownership, gun control in society, and guns and their use. Private possession of firearms does not pose a serious threat to society, but is an effective means of self-defense.I. Private Possession of FirearmsPersonal protection arises from private possession of firearms. There are many accounts of weapons repelling attackers (Lott 89). Most of the time when someone draws a gun, it is to fend off an attacker and nothing else is necessary (Lott 89). These two elements are easily visible in relation to each other. If someone pulls out a gun and an attack scares the attacker away, I would say the gun has become an effective means of self-defense. Firearms can also be used to protect not only a single person, but an entire company. Private handguns help private businesses prevent crime. Convicted criminals admit to changing tactics to prevent an armed confrontation (Lott 91). According to Lott, criminals tend to avoid people who are more likely to own guns, such as taxi drivers and drug dealers (91). If you were to think of armed robbery as a job, so to speak, the main goal of the thief is to get the job done with few problems, whether it's weather conditions, police intervention or even get hurt. They try to prevent these things because if any of these things were to happen, it would cost them money or their freedom; therefore move away from a company that has a gu......middle of paper......attack it and flee (Bernards 59). if gun owners were properly trained and informed, they would realize that they can reduce crime and keep themselves safe; this would lead to a drop in gun violence and help the government realize that we potentially need guns. All because some people are a little more informed. Private gun ownership does not pose a major threat to society; however, it provides an effective means of self-defense for citizens and private businesses. In retrospect, it is certain that bad things can happen without gun control. However, the downsides of gun control outweigh the benefits. If you look at the statistics, the main things that need to happen to keep society safe if we really want to inform society, so many crimes could be prevented if people knew what they were doing behind the trigger a gun..
