MetamorphosisDiscuss the idea developed by the creator of the text in The Metamorphosis about the role that kindness plays when individuals try to determine their own destiny "Metamorphosis" written by Franz Kafka is a short story about a family and how it transforms due to a significant event, which in this case is a metamorphosis from human to vermin by son Gregor Samsa. Kafka incorporates themes of isolation and limited sympathy, which mimics Kafka's personal experiences where Kafka felt alienated from his community because of antisepticism and abuse due to the treatment he received from his father growing up. Kindness is rarely present throughout the story, and while it is sprinkled here and there, it is often overshadowed and forgotten by darker themes such as isolation, alienation, and limited sympathy. Moreover, destiny cannot be prevented, but only determined by destiny and no act of kindness can control one's destiny. In “Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, Kafka incorporates the idea that kindness cannot control one's destiny and is often an obstacle that prevents the fulfillment of one's true destiny. Samsa is characterized as a dominant and lazy character who lived a "laborious but unsuccessful life" due to his entrepreneurial failure. Mr. Samsa forces Gregor into unfulfilling work that requires Gregor to "constantly see new faces" that never "last and never become more intimate", making it harder for Gregor to establish a connection or relationship, which was non-existent in his own house. This is illustrated when Gregor locked "all the doors during the night, even to his own home", suggesting that his home was a place where he was completely alienated. Additionally, Gregor was the family's only secure income. Gregor...... middle of paper ......s at the sight of his son and when Grete. Mr. and Mrs. Samsa begin to whisper to each other because of the uncomfortable atmosphere caused by Gregor's presence. Furthermore, these ideas of limited sympathy and alienation are reflected in Kafka's life, which mimics Kafka's personal experience with his father. Kafka's novel shows that kindness has no effect on destiny because destiny is determined only by destiny. In this case, Gregor's destiny was for him to die so his family could get back on their feet and become more independent, which is proven when the father continues to work. Kafka titles his novel because Metamorphosis shows not only the transformation of Gregor, but also the transformation of the family. Where actions of sympathy and kindness are forgotten and instantly turn into actions of disgust and neglect.
