Entertainment in EducationIn Neil Postman's book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, he discusses the impact of television on American culture. Postman explains how American culture is surrendering to television and shows how it's done. It shows the impact of television on writing, education and American youth. Postman explains how the way of teaching has changed to make it easier for our young people to understand and how they are not improving the curriculum but making it more entertaining. Somehow, television has crept into America's school systems and has, unfortunately, become an essential part of the education of our young people. I consider this a huge problem because we put in front of us at school what causes our minds to shut down! In what way does this cause our minds to shut down, you might ask? From a young age, we are taught that television is meant to be used for fun and entertainment, so the first time something doesn't interest us, we change the channel. Postman talks about this and mentions the effects that a show like "Sesame Street" has on us saying that there are many things about these kinds of shows that grab our attention, please us and serve as preparation for the entry into a fun-loving culture (142). ). But in reality, it turns out that not all learning is fun and sometimes effort is required to learn. Postman also says this: "Primarily, they will have learned that learning is a form of entertainment or, more precisely, that anything worth learning is a form of entertainment, and that it must be done" (154 ).
