  • Essay / The importance of working on an equal footing with a cultural group...

As a future educator, it is important to understand that diversity will be visible in classrooms. Accordingly, it is the role of the educator to become culturally competent, that is, the ability to successfully teach students from cultures other than your own. Diversity can involve different types of race, religion, gender, language, customs and culture. Teachers must consider all their students equal, regardless of their diversity and cultural background. This course helped shape my character and broaden my perspectives towards other cultures. I have had many memorable experiences through this course. The most valuable learning experience in the class discussions was the discussion of how teachers work with American Indian, Alaska Native, Irish, African American, and Latino students. I am learning that teachers need to be culturally sensitive to students from different cultures. It is the responsibility of teachers to understand their historical information, their principles, and how they relate to their teaching. I also learned that the types of materials are important when using them in the classroom because some materials go against the students' culture, so teachers need to be culturally competent. This struck me because I was not fully aware of the particular limitations associated with student culture. Another class discussion influenced me on the number of individuals perceiving the Hispanic cultural context. Some believed that Hispanic migration was affecting the United States economy for the worse, and for some, for the better. Their opinions somehow bothered me because they related to my cultural background. Two specific class activities that were memorable and affected me were the word and the...... middle of paper ...... m choices will be varied and given to students in order to help them grasp the material. I will offer different program choices to my students because all students have different learning styles and perceive information differently. There are many ways to work with students and families, for example; Teachers can plan certain activities that parents can participate in so that they are aware of what their children are learning. Teachers can also ask parents to volunteer and if they refuse, they can ask them why and help them find solutions. Educators can also hold meetings with students and parents to talk about their culture and experiences so they feel more comfortable around them. Overall. I loved taking this course! I have benefited immensely from completing my homework, watching movies, and reading Cultural Competence and A Different Mirror..
