Essay / Submission of Women in Brothers Grimm Fairy...
Character roles in Grimm's fairy tales, such as Briar Rose and Snow White, are consistently uniform in terms of gender. The princess, because of her submission and naivety, is struck by misfortune and must suffer until a male character comes to resolve the conflict. Additionally, the incidental characters in the tale are also gender uniform. Many tales are about the wicked stepmother and not the wicked stepfather. In Snow White, it is the stepmother who envies and hates her stepdaughter, which leads her to wish for her stepdaughter's death. In contrast, in Briar Rose, the father fulfills a massive request: destroy all spindles across the kingdom in an attempt to protect his beloved daughter. Therefore, it is the male characters who are portrayed as the most caring and best parents, while the female characters are portrayed much more negatively. Even when a female character is initially presented positively, she often succumbs to sudden catastrophe, such as death (Little Snow).
