Personal writing can take many forms, descriptive and narrative being two examples. The two essays, “I Want a Wife” by Judy Brady and “Sister Flowers” by Maya Angelou, are excellent examples of this. Both stories captured my attention and entertained me throughout their entirety. Choosing a preference will always be subjective; It all depends on how you like to receive information. In fact, it is personal choice that inclines you towards a certain title rather than another. Some may like to imagine their own details, while others may prefer images told for them. In fact, the clear details given in a descriptive essay versus a narrative distinguish the two. Although narrative essays can give details without as many words, the vivid pictures painted by a descriptive essay such as "Sister Flowers" are a superior read since the details bring the story to life. The story "I Want a Wife" is an essay narrative signifying the demands placed on women in the 1970s. The author goes on to demonstrate the expectations our male counterparts placed on women at that time. The way the author brought this issue to the surface was fascinating. As the author describes it, a woman should be seen and not heard, she should respond to every impulse of her husband. Written in order, a woman's duties were overwhelming and needed to be brought to light. Men were treated like kings by their wives, while showing little appreciation. A woman was expected to take care of the family while nothing was required of the husband. Additionally, a woman was expected to look her best while tackling all of life's problems. The essay does not provide a notable amount of detail, but the middle of the paper......ed product. “I Want a Wife” is an excellent story with just enough revelations to get the point across. There was no need to use overly expressive language, such as that used in a descriptive essay. “Sister Flowers” got its message across, however, the use of elucidating language is very evident. I love reading, but it's a lot of fun when words take you into a new world. A world where what you read comes to life and you never want to put the story down for fear of missing out on what happens next. In my opinion, this is exactly what a descriptive essay does and that is why I find it superior to a narrative essay. Works Cited Angelou, M. (1969). Sister flowers.
