Position Research Paper: Industrial AgricultureRebeca Castaneda11/27/2012Professor Sarah SorensonENGL 1010 – Fall 2012Position Research Paper: Industrial AgricultureIndustrial agriculture involves raising livestock in a small large-scale confined area for the purpose of providing food for human consumption. It is argued that factory farming is extremely cruel to the animals involved and that there are better ways to produce food. Food produced by factory farms may be cheaper, but it is likely to be of lower quality as well. The animals in these factories are not fed a particularly healthy diet. Factory farming may lead to the production of cheaper meat, but this could be bad for society since the health consequences can be fatal. Factory farming should be banned worldwide because not only is it cruel to innocent animals, but it also leads to major economic problems and health problems. Factory farms presented animal cruelty in a horrific way; unfortunately, the public often does not see what is really going on inside these “farms”. In order to understand the conditions present on these factory farms, one must first examine what the animals on these factory farms eat. Some of the common ingredients used to feed animals on factory farms include: animal by-products, plastic, drugs and chemicals, excess grain, and meat from members of the same species. (Adams, 2007) These animals are tortured and used only for slaughter in order to be fed. Typically, large numbers of animals are kept in tight, closed enclosures, with little or no room to move around. These confinements can lead to suffocation and death and are not uncommon. Animal cruelty, huge economic problems, and major health problems are just three reasons why factory farming should be banned worldwide. Many people say that industrial agriculture is the only way to meet the world's growing demand for food today. However, factory farming is simply not necessary, especially when it involves killing innocent animals to feed people. One way to end the factory farming system is to buy our food from smaller, sustainable farms. These companies always aim to profit from their work, but that is not their only goal. (The Issues: Factory Farming, nd) They simply won't sacrifice the health of the land or the quality of the food just to make a few extra dollars..
