    Alec Derwent Hope (1907-2000) was one of Australia's greatest poets and critics. He touched the lives of many people through his works. He is recognized as one of the most influential poets of the 20th century. He is praised for his biting satire, the clarity of his language and the sophistication of his poetic vision. He is also considered a satirical poet because many of his works criticize technology, conformity, and the absurdity of modern life. His works ranged from satire to tender lyricism, and his poems are metaphysical, sensual, serious, frivolous, mocking, mystical and rational (Hulibandi, 2012). He was undoubtedly truly influenced by Australia. His poems reveal images of Australia and modern life. “Australia” is one of his poems written in an ABBA rhyme scheme. In this poem, Hope discussed Australia's current situation and his criticism of Australian society in general. He has also written about the lack of culture and intellectual challenges found in Australian society. The poem reflects Australia as a country both new and old, geographically old and politically new, both European colonial and individual (Watson, n.d.). In the first stanza, Hope began the poem with a somber tone. image of Australia as "A nation of trees, dull green and desolate gray In the field uniform of modern warfare" (Hope, nd). He used words such as “dull” and “desolate” in order to give a negative approach to the poem thus exploring the spiritual poverty of the earth. He despised Australia and its way of life. In the past, Australia was an environmentally rich country. It reminded the reader of the country's lack of cultural identity. Finally, Hope began the poem with a negative approach towards Australia, thus ending the poem on a positive note. He is a well-known Australian poet and critic.
