Essay / There's always someone watching me - 1113
“I always feel like someone's watching me!” » That's the refrain from a Rockwell song from 1984. It's twenty years later and those words still speak the truth, but have a much deeper meaning. Today you can't do anything in this world without someone knowing what it is. In general, privacy is the right to be free from secret surveillance and to determine whether, when, how, and to whom personal or organizational information should be revealed. The development of social media and today's technological advancements make privacy an outdated concept and a thing of the past. The question now is how far have we gone too far and have we lost our fundamental right to privacy in the name of progress. The idea of privacy in this ever-changing world and technological advancement is slowly becoming a thing of the past. Whether it's cell phone equipment with a video camera, a camera running at red lights, the ability for people to steal your identity over a WiFi connection, or reporting every move you make in your daily life on Facebook, it now seems like nothing is off limits. We live our lives through our cell phones and wearable devices, which makes it possible to view every moment of your life in real time. One of the newest products to enter the realm of sharing every moment is Google Glass. Google Glass is a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted display developed by Google. Google Glass displays information in a hands-free smartphone-like format, capable of communicating with the Internet via natural language voice commands. This pair or glasses essentially transmit all the information you see with your eyes to a Google cloud where it is stored. Such data knowingly or unknowingly collected and passing through bandwidth...... middle of paper ... can be exposed and there is literally nothing I can do about it. I watch TV shows about people going off the grid voluntarily. I used to think they were crazy thugs, but I think maybe they're right. If staying off the grid means I can live my life in peace and not have to worry about being in a government database or not having an embarrassing video uploaded to Facebook without my knowledge, that may be a good idea. When the power to choose is taken away from you, scary things can happen. Technology will continue to advance and there will be new gadgets that we can use in our everyday lives, but I hope that we as people can develop better self-esteem and know when to say when with the invasion of privacy. In Rockwell's words: "Can the people on TV see me, or am I just paranoid?" "Actually, they probably are and we don't even know it.
