  • Essay / An Analysis of the Deaf Again By Mark Drolsbaugh - 1384

People often think that a disability means the person is cognitively incapable in addition to the obvious, or not so obvious, truth. I strongly believe that people should be labeled based on their abilities rather than their disabilities. This is why I like the idea that the Deaf community defines itself as culturally Deaf with a capital D rather than a lowercase d, which is the condition of not being able to hear. When Drolsbaugh received strong backlash for using the word Deaf, it was because those people didn't know what to do due to his deafness. I wonder what the world, or at least America, would be like if everyone understood this concept; more so, i wonder what it would be like if sign language was commonly taught in primary schools in hearing countries.
