Essay / The Struggle for Education - 1303
Having a good education plays an important role in our life. Not only does it help us get a good job, but it also helps us expand our knowledge and prepare us for a successful future. However, not everyone has the chance to pursue a university education. Another problem that well-educated people face is preparing their academic knowledge for college. When you enter university, everyone's academic knowledge is different. However, in today's society, people's academic knowledge does not meet the expectations of college. Rebecca D. Cox states in her article "The College Fear Factor" that students struggle in college because of their past experience from kindergarten through twelfth grade. When they enter college, students do not understand what their professor is asking of them. Students are not taught how to analyze and interpret a text in college. In the article "The Politics of Remediation," Mike Rose recounts his experience as a counselor and how five students are struggling at the University of California, Los Angles. Each of the five students has their own problem in college and they relate their current problem with their high school experience. Both articles imply that high school affects students in college, and both agree that it is not the students' fault for their academic literacy. Students are not able to understand the academic skills required in the university system. High school, for some students, did not prepare them for this and the students are not aware of it. Academic literacy develops differently in all types of schools and at my high school there was a lack of experience needed to help students prepare us for academic literacy in college. In addition, high schools do not prepare students in the middle of paper. ...a place to be if high school academics didn't prepare them for college. Going straight from high school to college is a challenge. No one knows what to expect from college. In college, everything is different. The knowledge acquired in high school will be modified to allow you to understand the subject as much as possible. You may not have learned anything in high school, but that will change once you get to college. It can be difficult at first, and it may still be difficult at the end, but there are resources such as tutoring and office hours that will help you succeed in college. Take advantage of these resources like the 5 students in Rose's article. Even if mistakes occur, they can be corrected the next time we try again, because everyone learns from their mistake. No one is a failure as long as the person tries their best to succeed.
