  • Essay / Relationship Between Dependency and Power - 967

The following essay is a discussion of the five bases of power (which are coercive, reward, legitimate, expert, and referent) and the relationship between dependence and power. For each of the bases of power and the aforementioned relationship, I will develop a thesis. The framework within which the theses are to be exploited is a theoretical scenario in which there is a company that creates marketing programs for the real estate sector: this company will now be identified as Company A. Within Company A, there there are three employees; Employee 1 has worked in the marketing department for 12 years, employee 2 is the only certified public accountant (CPA) in the accounting department, employee 3 works in the sales department and has been with the company for a little longer of one year. The dynamic between these employees, their peers and managers creates the framework within which theses must be developed. The first employee to consider is employee 1. As mentioned earlier, this employee has been with the company for 12 years and works in the marketing department. In this department, employees who score higher on their annual performance review receive a significant bonus at the end of the year. The marketing manager encourages employees to work beyond the required 40 hours per week by reminding them of the annual bonus if they obtain a higher grade in their next evaluation. In response to the possibility of a bonus, Employee 1 often comes into the office on weekends or stays late to ensure work is complete and accurate, in hopes of being able to pay for vacation time that would otherwise be unaffordable. In this scenario, the marketing manager's ability to review employee performance for evaluation is the...... middle of paper......dependence. He further posits: The greater the dependence of B on A, the greater the power of A over B. In the proposed scenario, we can clearly see two cases of dependency; The first is the dependence of employee 1 on his manager, the second is the dependence of the accounting manager on employee 2. Employee 1 depends on his managers submitting a higher rating during an annual performance review: without this, employee 1 will not receive a substantial bonus. The effects of dependency are manifested in Employee 1's willingness to work weekends and stay late to ensure work is complete and accurate, which is encouraged by his manager. Regarding the accounting manager's dependence on employee 2, the manager is entirely dependent on the skills and certification of employee 2; to the point where employee 2 exploited his power base to adopt a modified 4 day work week.
