Essay / Male and Female Reproductive Systems - 655
Reproductive systems are based on the goal of creating offspring. The male and female reproductive systems, although powered by a similar purpose, have different components and structures. Both systems are very complex in their own way, so it is important to understand how each of the systems and their different processes work. Knowing the processes and components of the male and female reproductive systems will help everyone in their lives, at one time or another. It is important to understand how our individual bodies work and how life is produced. The female reproductive system is made up of 9 parts. The sex cell of the female reproductive system is called the egg or ovum. The egg spends its dormant life in the ovaries until it is released. The egg contains 23 chromosomes. The ovaries serve two purposes: to create and harbor eggs and to release the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. The fallopian tubes are those through which the egg passes to reach the uterus. The fallopian tubes contain tiny hair-like structures called cilia; the cilia allow the mobility of the egg. The fallopian tube is about the size of 2 hairs and is the site where ectopic pregnancies occur. The process by which the egg is released from the ovaries through the fallopian tubes is called ovulation. Ovulation occurs on the 14th day of the menstrual cycle. The uterus is where the egg goes after it passes through the fallopian tubes. The developing baby is held and nourished in the womb. When the uterus is empty, it is about the size of a fist, but as it enlarges, the embryo begins to develop. The endometrium is the lining of the uterine wall. It is used to protect the fetus. When the egg is not fertilized, menstruation has...... middle of paper ...... the purpose is to clean the urethra of harmful bacteria and other substances before ejaculation. The penis, which is composed of neither muscle nor bone, is the next stop for sperm. Its three main purposes are urine transport, sperm transport and sensation. Inside the penis is the urethra. The functions of the urethra are to carry urine from the bladder to the outside of the body and to ejaculate semen during sexual intercourse. The tip of the penis is called the scrotum and its three main functions are to act as a thermometer for the testicles, to protect and support the testicles and to provide various sensations. Overall, the male and female reproductive systems are important parts of our lives. Knowing more about them can help us understand how to do certain things, like prevent pregnancy. The more we know ourselves, the more we understand others.
