While Thomas Hobbes believed that all people were evil and only fought for their own interests, John Locke believed that all people are naturally moral because they come out as empty slates that they learn through experiences to fill. instead of being downright bad. John Locke's philosophy supported democratic government because if a government is like an absolute monarch, it will not satisfy all the needs of the people and this explains why the people have the right to revolt against an abusive government, as evidenced by American example. Revolutionary War with King George III or French War of Independence with King Louis XVI who did not support the ideas and goals of his citizens. Thomas Hobbes' philosophy states that people cannot become trustworthy because they fight only for their own interests, meaning that the absolute monarch would demand obedience to maintain order, but John Locke states that people can become trustworthy since everyone is naturally luxurious since we are. all born with a blank slate, but based on our experiences, people can govern themselves. The purpose of government, according to John Locke, is to protect individual freedoms and rights instead of simply maintaining law and order, because if law and order were strictly enforced, the people would rebel.
