  • Essay / The four major theories of experiential orientations

I believe that this theory would allow me to develop an integrative approach. The theory is about accepting what it means to be human and that we are all the authors of our lives. I think this particular theory allows people to accept who they are, what they do and what they believe, but helps them realize that who they are is neither absolute nor immutable and that they can recreate themselves. In my group, in addition to the fact that my main theory is existential, I would draw inspiration from psychoanalysis (insight into unconscious motivation), cognitive therapy (cognitive restructuring), rational emotive behavior therapy (eliminating self-destructive perspectives ), reality therapy (choice) and narrative therapy (separate from problems). If I had to limit myself to one additional theory, it would be Rational Emotional Behavior Therapy. I believe this theory would complement Existential, due to the Existential focus on accepting what it means to be human, while Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy helps reduce unhealthy emotional responses and eliminates a self-destructive outlook on life. I believe that to accept what it means to be human (existential) and become the author of one's own life (existential), one must eliminate one's self-destructive perspectives (REBT) and unhealthy emotional responses.
