  • Essay / Gandhi Research Paper - 981

Gandhi often went on hunger strikes in order to help people. “Gandhiji goes on a hunger strike until the factory owners and workers resolve their dispute” (Sheth, Kashmir 74). He continued his hunger strike until he reached his goal “when Gandhiji began his fast”. . . I thought the factory owners would move, but they did. They gave a raise to the workers” (Sheth, Kashmir 77). Gandhi always cared about the people and emphasized the importance of equality through women. He encouraged women to educate themselves. “He expressed his views on education. . . he said that men and women both needed education if they wanted to be equal partners” (Sheth, Kashmira 204). Gandhi also took steps towards equality by wearing simple clothes made by Indians in order to become closer to Indians. “Gandhiji dressed in a small white cap, an undershirt and a white dhoti. . . the way a person dresses always reflects who they are. . . if he is dressed like the poor, it will help him gain their trust and support” (Sheth, Kashmira 95). By dressing like the poor, not only would the poor trust him more, but they would also feel more connected and equal to Gandhi. Gandhi's self-sacrificing actions for Indian independence gave confidence to the people that his cause was worth fighting for and strengthened their willingness to sacrifice as well.
