  • Essay / The Evolution of Advertising in The Persuaders

The Influence of AdvertisingAdvertising is as old as civilization itself. They are forever interconnected. If one changes, so does the other. So, as our society has evolved significantly under the influence of technology and social media, the way we advertise has also evolved. Thanks to the power of technology, advertising has gained the ability to be everywhere at once. These locations ranged from billboards, to projection screens hanging from skyscrapers, to your homes as advertisements. The evolution of advertising in the modern world is both somewhat disturbing and innovative. The documentary film “The Persuaders” is an excellent film that captures the evolution of advertising. The film is divided into six distinct segments. Each segment can be seen as a specific moment in time when advertising evolved in order to survive in the rapidly changing society in which we live. The film begins with a crucial concept of standing out. The narrator mentions in the first minutes of the film that companies are having trouble coming up with new advertising ideas. This may not seem like a big deal, but the narrator goes on to explain that over the years, the number of advertisements has increased exponentially. It got to the point where people were starting to pay less and less attention to advertisements. One of the people interviewed for this film was Naomi Klien, author of “No Logo.” Naomi said that consumers are like cockroaches, you spray them and you spray them and after a while it doesn't work anymore you develop immunities. Realizing the threat this poses to them, many companies have tried many ways to overcome what they call the clutter crisis. Their need to attract advertising attention...... middle of paper...... drives regardless of the circumstances. “Most people have two opinions: as consumers and as investors” (Robert B. Reich 2).
