Literary AnalysisSue Monk Kidd's first novel, The Secret Life of Bees, was a literary success. However, Sue didn't succeed all of a sudden by luck. In The Secret Life of Bees, Sue brought together many elements to complete her novel. Some elements include Sue's contribution to southern-style language, aspects of main character Lily's voice, and the inclusion of imagery. A crucial element brought in is Sue's writing style. In The Secret Life of Bees, Sue not only sets the novel in South Carolina during the period of desegregation, but she also incorporates the southern voice into her writing. Sue does this by including terms such as "Yankee" and "Fella" to give the reader a sense of daily Southern life. For example: "...I thought about this policeman, Eddie Hazelwurst, saying that I had stooped to the point of being in this house of colored women, and for the life of me I couldn't understand how how things had happened like this, how women of color had become the lowest on the totem pole. You only had to look at them to see how special they were, like hidden kings among us. Eddie Hazelwurst. What shit” (Kidd 147). This quote shows the southern voice that Sue puts into each of her characters. Another element included in The Secret Life of Bees is Sue's contribution on the voice of the main character Lily. Lily's narration ranges from humorous to dramatic language. The versatility of Lily's voice is astonishing; Sue is able to cover many aspects and adds additional elements to her tone. Additionally, Sue often refers to Lily's emotive language, emphasizing her power and emotional aspect in order to speak to the reader through the text. An example of Lily's humorous/adorable voice is: "He arched his face... middle of paper... writing some more. For example "I watched their wings shine like pieces of chrome in the dark and I felt the desire in my chest. The way those bees flew, not even looking for a flower, flying just for the feel of the wind, "cracked my heart at the seam" (Kidd 1). This quote is a perfect example of imagery used in The secret life of bees, because you can imagine what the character feels and what he sees It is described so vividly that it is as if readers can hear the bees buzzing in their ears. these three elements contributed greatly to the creation of The Secret Life of Bees, Without them, Sue Monk Kidd might not have created the novel as much Sue Monk Kidd brought together the language of the southern style, the aspects of voice. of the main character Lily and the inclusion of images to create the incredibly written novel, The Secret Life of Bees..
