Essay / great country of ours, WE the people cannot decide what to do about the problems we face. We can only decide WHO decides. Our founding fathers established us as a representative democracy. As a system of governance, it has flaws. But so far it seems to have worked better than the others. Or maybe not. As a nation, we are very unhappy with everything our elected officials have done lately. And it’s not partisan either. At least that’s what the “experts” tell us. All we've heard about in the news media, on pundit television, and on the radio is what's called "anti-incumbency fever." Apparently we are ready to “throw the bums out.” But I don't see how that's going to happen. First of all, they're not all bums, no matter how long they've been in power. Of course, this doesn't mean we shouldn't be looking for good people with new ideas. It simply means that we shouldn't arbitrarily kick people out of office before we have better alternatives. Second, collectively, last time I looked, Congress's approval rating was in the TEENS. Individually, however, the approval ratings of myriad voters for THEIR members of Congress were extremely high. So, I guess that means that in one way or another, every other congressional delegation is made up of bumbling idiots, but OUR delegation is doing a superb job! Out of some 45 primary elections across the country, I'm counting them all, not just these ones. that are making national headlines: So far, only three incumbents have lost their re-election bids. The local numbers are even more striking when it comes to the number of incumbents who won re-election. I wonder though if it's possible that a political party... middle of paper... we, the voters, are stupid. I always believed that most of us were smart enough to yell in front of dummies, but using the last 12 years as a guide, I'm starting to have doubts. Do WE, the people, really have the final say and the power to back it up when the United States Congress decides to do what is in THEIR best interests instead of doing what is in OUR best interests? And if we DO, WHAT exactly can we do? Think about it; I'm just asking. Diseconomies of scale! Perhaps we should look into this possibility before it is too late. Break things down into more manageable chunks and start demanding that the news be taken out of the entertainment business and that the United States Congress (ALL MEMBERS) stop speaking in tongues!
