  • Essay / Theodore Roosevelt and the Progressive Party - 1883

At the turn of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Americans faced rapid growth of industries and businesses, corruption of the political system, and disorder in the structure of the political system. country. This led to reform of the movement which eventually led to the creation of a third party called the Progressive Party. It was also known as the "Bull Moose Party". Some of the programs and policies that still exist today were created by the Progressive Party which reached its peak during the presidential election of 1912 (Milkis, p. 30). Theodore Roosevelt had become president after the assassination of William McKinley; he became the youngest president at the age of 42. As president, he attempted to steer the Republican Party toward progressivism, including increasing regulation of businesses. Also, during his presidency, he brought many changes to the United States. After completing his two terms, William Taft was elected president. Roosevelt believed that Taft would realize his progressive ideals, but over time he was unable to appease both sides, the progressives and conservatives of the Republican Party (Milkis, p. 40). As a result, Roosevelt announced that he would reenter the political realm and seek the Republican nomination; however, Republicans continued to support Taft, and Roosevelt created a new party called the Progressive Party (Milkis, p. 42). Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 in New York, New York. As a young boy, Roosevelt was a sickly and delicate boy, suffered greatly from asthma, and often had to be taken on trips to find a better place where he could breathe (Roosevelt, Theodore, p 17).
