Essay / Approaches to Genre - 1973
When an author begins to construct a novel, there are a plethora of diverse factors that he must take into account. Not only does an author care about the superficial story (the plots, characters, actions, and dialogue), but they also care about the approach they take when writing their story. Approach refers to how the author's audience reads the words the author deliberately chooses to write. Often, any given approach an author decides to use is a way for themselves to take a stance on a specific issue happening in the world around them. Writers use their literary works to expose their own personal beliefs. A popular approach taken by writers is the genre approach. Authors will express their opinions on different gender issues through character roles, dialogue and word choice. Having an approach, such as genre, forces the audience to read the text in a specific way, and often the author's statement can cause the reader to question their own beliefs and society. important approach for authors to use because gender issues are endless. Gender issues – such as expectations of women or domination of men against women – are constant, and there may never be a solution to resolve the gender war. Because gender arguments are constant, authors often choose to discuss them in their literary works. The positions they take on different gender issues are important when readers interpret them correctly. Without readers interpreting what the author is actually trying to say, the author's approach makes no sense. But when readers can truly identify the author's underlying message, it gives them the opportunity...... middle of paper...... an inferior, frightened woman. Nothing more than someone who will always be defeated by the fist of man. Nothing more than a generous and motherly figure. In many novels, genre plays a huge role in developing the ideas and actions of the overall story. Making statements about gender through literature is a way for an author to express their opinions in a way that other people can relate to. Regardless of one's opinion on gender – men are dominant, women are more than housewives, or women are who they are supposed to be – authors have the opportunity to say something, and possibly to change something, on issues that they consider important. . By choosing an approach, incorporating cues about their personal beliefs, and allowing readers to agree or disagree with them, writers can ultimately play a role in changing the way people things work, just like the writer's audience..
