  • Essay / Jealousy Begins/Othello - 954

This play is filled with many emotions and feelings. There were four main flaws that led to the tragedy of Othello and the others in this play; racism, love, betrayal, but it was jealousy that played a major role. It can destroy many relationships and take a huge amount of control over the mind. Jealousy can also be overwhelming; by making people obsessed with ideas. They are all victims of jealousy; it makes them act outside of their norm. I'm going to talk about the five main characters in this play and they are all shrouded in jealousy in their own way. They are Iago (the antagonist), Emilia, Bianca, Roderigo and Othello (the protagonist), all of whom display their feelings of jealousy throughout the play. They all find different ways to support them. Iago states his jealousy at the beginning of the play. He decides to take revenge on those who he believes have wronged him. The first two jealousies he expresses concern Cassio, as he retains his position as lieutenant and gets a promotion. He believes that this should be his job (e-notes 2011). The second is from Othello; he believes that Othello slept with Emilia (his wife). “We think on board between my sheets” (I.iii.369-370). As he becomes fixated on revenge, he speaks saying, he will not be satisfied "'Till I am equal with him/woman for wife/At least in jealousy so strong/that judgment does not cannot cure (2.1.299-302). In the end, Iago is forced to expose his true nature. Emilia is close to Desdemona and it may be that her jealousy is resentful, due to her low social status, unhappy with her job, Desdemona being married to Othello or Desdemona's innocence. This could also be because she is jealous that Othello and Desdemona love each other and have no jealousy between them. Emilia's chara...... middle of paper ......lo was written many years ago, and we can still relate to its tone and setting in the play, especially when A person can feel jealousy. It's a game that people relate to because we all want to be loyal in one way or another and we all know how complicated it can be when someone decides to take advantage and step forward about someone else's jealousy. It's terrible, but jealousy can change a person in terrible ways. “No two wrongs make things right and no two rights make things wrong.” Works Cited play at http://pages.cabrini.edu/jzurek/shakes/othelloplay.htm online (nd)Othello: Summary." emotes: Othello.
