Essay / Imagination is powerful in Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's...
Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth is not based on any literacy books. Alice in Wonderland by Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson and Hamilton Luske is based on the original story of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The Company of Wolves by Neil Jordan is an adaptation of the short story of the same name by Angela Carter. The three female protagonists evolve, physically and mentally, from girls to women. Imagination offers the three protagonists freedom from oppression and abuse. In Pan's Labyrinth, the main character, Ofelia, is abused by her fascist stepfather and uses her mind to escape his torture. In Alice in Wonderland, the protagonist, Alice uses her imagination to free herself from societal norms. In The Company of Wolves, the heroine Rosaleen frees herself from the mistreatment inflicted by her sister. In Pan's Labyrinth, Alice in Wonderland, and The Company of Wolves, the protagonists use anger to produce a fantasy world that reflects the injustice of the real world and gives them control, but ultimately their bodies become sensitive to their spirit. The heroines invent a fantastic world that reflects the injustice they suffer in the real world. Mercedes, a housekeeper, uses Ofelia to cover up her betrayal of Captain Vidal. Out of affection, the governess gains Ofelia's trust and therefore prevents her from opening her mouth to the captain. Ofelia meets a faun in the maze and she discovers him. The Faun uses it to bring tranquility to the underworld and ease the king's pain at not having a daughter. In both worlds, other characters use Ofelia as a tool to achieve their goals. On the other hand, Alice is forced by her society and her sister to behave correctly. She pr...... middle of paper ...... controls the characters and atmosphere through consciousness manipulation. At the end of the film, Alice is about to be persecuted by the Queen of Hearts, when she sees herself through the door and tells herself to open her eyes. When she opens her eyes, the figures and her agony disappear. Alice is able to turn her fantasy world on and off, similar to a human controlling an electronic device. However, Rosaleen's power is illustrated when she releases the wolf within her. Throughout the story, she lived under the influence of her grandmother. When Rosaleen decides to disobey her grandmother, she lets go of her fear and takes control of her life. Although she is the main character of the story, this is only evident when she transforms into a werewolf. Through the transformation, Rosaleen gains power over herself. The characters' universe contributes to their power.
