Essay / From Abuse to Empowerment: Precious's Transformation
Precious is an African American woman who is currently pregnant by her biological father for the second time. She is sixteen years old and cannot read or write. She constantly suffers from pitfalls at her young age. She is heavily obsessed and is subject to abuse from her vicious, dysfunctional, abusive and unemployed mother. With the right support from a committed principal, teacher, and social worker, Precious's life becomes positive. Family Living in the New York ghetto: Harlem, the family relied on public assistance and welfare to survive. Precious regularly suffers physical, mental and sexual abuse from both of her parents. She lives with her mother and her father reportedly has other family across town. The plan was for Precious to get a GED. Not knowing Precious's dysfunctional family situation, the principal assumes that Precious is promiscuous and needs to change her life. Little did the headmistress know that she would be the saving grace and start of a new life for Precious and her born and unborn babies. Unfortunately, in the film, Precious experiences another abusive attack from her mother despite knowing that the principal had come to her house to tell her about Precious' academic performance. Mother thought Precious was misbehaving at school or talking to “white people” about their family matters. At the alternative school, Precious is inspired and encouraged by a very caring and passionate teacher, Blu Rain. She also meets many other female peers like her in the program. They all become a support system for each other. Precious learns to read and write and begins writing a daily journal about the life she dreams of having for herself. She feels like her body, her appearance, the incest and abuse in her home with her mother have made her life unpleasant. She dreams of dating “light” skinned men, being in movies, and having a very functional family with her two.
