  • Essay / Sexual intimacy and sexuality in late adulthood

Any recent act or failure to act by a parent or guardian that results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation. This is what you need to do to keep your children safe. Aging is a complex process; it revolves around many changes in a person's life, whether physical, psychological or social. An important aspect that changes with aging is the sexual development of an individual. An individual's sexuality and need for intimacy are often considered very important to their well-being and can determine how well a person will continue to live and age. However, sexuality is often ignored at certain stages of life, particularly in late adulthood. The reason for this is often that society constructs these ideas that sexual intimacy in late adulthood (65+) is not important and that individuals lose interest and ability to achieve it. They believe that humans are becoming asexual creatures, whose intimate needs must not be met. There can be many causes for decreased sexual activity, such as time-related factors, as dysfunctions in the sexual response cycle may require more time for genital stimulation. There may also be medical and psychosocial factors, such as lack of privacy and knowledge, that will contribute to this decrease. An open attitude needs to be acquired from society and the health sector, so that they can encourage people to talk about their sexual health and find solutions for a healthy sex life. As we know, the majority of people aged 65 and older currently engage in sexual activity and engage in behaviors that satisfy their sense of intimacy. It is not just about sexual intercourse, but rather the feeling of being loved, essential to an elderly person's sexual identity (Mitty & Rhéaume, 2008).
