  • Essay / Refraction of Light - 610

Light: the quantum phenomenon that provides light energy to our world. Radiant energy is why we can observe a twinkling star in the night sky, perceive the colors in a painting, distinguish day and night, and witness life itself. However, the concept of light is difficult to digest. There are many questions about this that still need to be thought through, and most of the existing questions require technology outside of yours and mine to answer. But we can prove something without many modern tools: light manipulation. Light manipulation consists of three central keys: reflection, refraction and absorption. Waves bounce, bend and soak as a result of these forms of manipulation. We'll focus on refraction, the reason light waves bend. The rays, depending on the material they pass through, move at different speeds. It travels through the void the fastest since it is vacant space. Air comes next in the list. What if light traveled from air to water? Refraction would cause light to bend or rotate as it passed through a medium of different density. Knowing what the word is is one thing, but knowing...
