In a recent survey, all of the teens involved reported feeling stress from some area of their lives. The stress in a teenager's life can come from many different places and have serious and damaging effects. The effects of stress on teens can have serious long-term consequences for school, work, and family, but there are many ways to help teens manage stress. For 16-year-old Abby, managing school, work and her home life isn't as easy. as is the case for others. She lives in a house with her single-parent father and her two younger brothers. She takes care of her younger brothers most of the time while her father works night shifts. On a daily basis, Abby experiences many different things that stress her out. Abby's alarm goes off at 5:45 p.m., and she struggles to get out of bed, still exhausted from yesterday's responsibilities. She jumps in the shower and gets ready for the day. She then wakes her two younger brothers, while they get ready she makes them eggs and toast for breakfast and prepares their lunches. She takes them out and takes them to school. Once she arrives at school, she begins to feel more pressure. As each class progresses and she discovers her homework for the night, her stress begins to increase. She thinks about how she is going to do everything before going to work, knowing that she has to take care of her brothers. She tries to make a lot of friends but finds herself much more mature than most of the other children. After school, she picks up her brothers and takes them home. She begins her homework but is constantly interrupted by her brothers' arguments. Around 4:30 p.m., she prepares dinner, doing a little homework every free second she has. She makes the boys sit for... in the middle of the newspaper... healthier than the children who don't (Africa News Service). If you're the parent of an easily stressed child, slow everything down.
