Essay / The importance of citizen journalism and alternative media
The public, desperate to see the news media challenge powerful and authoritative entities and institutions to ensure they are held accountable, has increasingly in addition turned towards alternative sources and platforms for its information. Thanks to the Internet and the proliferation of Internet access, the readership of alternative news weeklies has grown from just three million in 1989 to nearly eight million in 2007 (Kenix, 2011). At the same time, there has been a significant decline in the number of people getting their news from mainstream media (Kenix, 2011). Additionally, the rise of mainstream anti-media sentiment among many in society has strengthened the field of citizen journalism (Moore, 2014). This helps clarify the idea that alternative media and citizen journalism can take over from mainstream media. These organizations are better positioned to report news accurately due to their separation from direct corporate influence. Unlike traditional, mainstream news organizations, citizen journalists are not motivated to entertain nor are they trying to serve corporations.
