Essay / Counter-arguing Coleman's claims that...
The argument made by John Coleman, in his article "The Greatest Global Warming Scam in History!" ”, is erroneous mainly due to numerous logical errors. “Ad Hominem”, “Guilt by Association”, “Red Herring”, “Appeal to Irrelevant Authority”, “Hazy Generalization” and “Genetic Fallacy” are some of the logical fallacies that may prevail in Coleman's argument . Accordingly, the strength, validity, clarity, reasoning and coherence of the entire article are not substantial. Coleman's premises fail to support his proposition that global warming is a scam, making the entire argument distorted and flawed. The first flawed premise that Coleman uses to support his claim is that scientists are “vile,” “manipulative,” and “wacky.” , who are only “eager to produce results that would be important and widely noticed and would trigger more research funding”. Coleman says scientists who claim global warming is happening are only pursuing their own agenda. They are fools, only after fame and glory. As such, he believes that their conclusions should therefore not be trusted. This flawed logic is an example of “Abusive Ad Hominem.” By describing scientists as "vile," "manipulative," and "crazy," Coleman attacks scientists on a personal level in an attempt to discredit their findings. The logical fallacy is to assume that a person's argument has a direct correlation to their character, when that is not the case. In this case, it should not be assumed that the strength of a scientist's argument is determined by his character. These types of abusive comments do not strengthen Coleman's argument at all, but rather show how baseless his premise is. Additionally, another type of "Ad Hominem" can be observed...... middle of article ......e "vile", "manipulative" and "wacky", which in itself relies on the principle that doctors are part of a “purposeful culture”. Coleman presented no facts, data, or references to his many premises, but used a lot of flawed logic to convince the reader. Due to the various logical fallacies contained in the article “The Biggest Global Warming Scam in History!” ” by John Coleman, it becomes clear that this is a flawed argument. John Coleman doesn't have a convincing argument that global warming is a scam. Works Cited Almossawi, A. (2014). A book illustrated with bad arguments.
