    The dream of the founding fathers of any political party in the world is that its members share the same vision with them, follow in their footsteps and preserve their lasting legacy. This is naturally what successive members of the party are expected to stand for, especially when the vision and legacy respond to the challenges of their times. But when the opposite happens due to unexpected changes in the political equation, immediate changes need to be made within the party to avoid a colossal defeat in the elections. The founding fathers of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) reached, sometimes in 2002, a controversial informal agreement on the rotation (zoning) of strategic elective positions along the northern and southern axis of the country. Their goal was for the party to gain national acceptability among the country's various ethnic groups and, above all, to respond to the unrest among the population in the southwest of the country.
