Essay / Death and its personification in Greek mythology and...
Death “The fear of death is deeply rooted in us” (Cave 1). Death is something everyone fears. As humans, we like to believe that we are inhuman and that death will never affect us. It's the bad side of life that no one likes to think about. No matter our race, culture, or region, we all die. Many believe that when we die we go to heaven or hell, but what happens to our bodies after we die? Are we floating in a parallel universe, or does our body just appear where we are meant to be? The Grim Reaper is what many of us believe to be the transporter between the two worlds and the guardian of our bodies. The Grim Reaper is known as the personification of death. He comes for each person, like an hourglass needle waiting for the last drop of sand to fall. Many remember him in a long black coat, with a large razor sharp blade waiting to cut through your soul. His skull is hidden under the falling black hood. This vision of the Reaper was mainly adapted by the Americans. The Greeks believed that death should not be considered such a horrible part of life, which is why they named death Thanatos. Thanatos is the older brother of Hypnos (Sleep), who admires him. Thanato's powers only affect humans and not gods, which is what he wants to be. This makes him angry because he doesn't want to limit the number of people he can kill. Therefore, Thanatos hates all mortals because of God's refusal to become one of them. Death and Sleep were to take care of the Lycian prince Sarpedon. Prince Sarpedon was the son of Zeus, the king of the gods, and his mother Laodamiea. He was the hero of the bloody Trojan War. Sarpedon fought alongside the Trojans but was stabbed by the Greek warrior Patroculs. When the hero... in the middle of paper... was killed by the Black Death. Death awaits Block, but Antonius blocks his life by challenging him to a game of chess and Block loses. This shows a darker version of the Reaper and how deceptive he can be when man tests his powers. The Grim Reaper is a very complex character, but in today's popular culture he is portrayed as a one-dimensional character. His basic information is not shown in the films, they chose to show the bad sides of him. This is great because it will give them greater profit to represent the way it has been seen for thousands of years. If the true story of the Grim Reaper was depicted, people would be more sympathetic towards him and he would not be seen as the one responsible for the death. As humans, we fear death and so we need someone to blame it on. It would be lost if we took the time to know the monster, The Grim Reaper..
