    Diana Blumberg Baurmrind was born on August 23, 1927. She is the eldest of two daughters born to Hyman and Mollie Baurmrind. She was born into a Jewish community in New York. Baurmrind is a clinical and developmental psychologist known for her theory on parenting style. Diana married while heading off to graduate school in 1948. Diana was the eldest in the family and inherited the role of eldest son, which allowed him to participate in conversations that interested him and that carried on philosophy, ethics, literature and politics. . Baurmrind earned an AB in Philosophy and Psychology from Hunter College. While she was in school, Baumrind's professors at Hunter College reinforced her social awareness and philosophical foundations in dialectical materialism (Biography of Diana Blumberg Baumrind). Her teachers were Marxists just like her. In 1948, Baumrind graduated from the University of California, Berkeley campus. She studied developmental, clinical and social psychology. Baumrind received his master's degree in 1951 and his doctorate in 1955. She conducted research on parent-child interactions in the home which led her to the theory that there are four parenting styles and that the difference between the styles depends on how the child functions socially, emotionally and cognitively . Baumrind believed that there were four dimensions. to the four parenting styles which included parental control, demanding maturity, clarity of communication and nurturing.
