Essay / Eli Whitney Research Paper - 815
Eli Whitney was born on December 8 in the year 1765 in Westborough, Massachusetts. He was known as an engineer and manufacturer; but more importantly, he was known as "the third best American inventor of the pre-atomic era" (Inventor of the Week). From childhood, Whitney was interested in machines. During his youth, Whitney invented the nail-making machine, and later in life he designed the first milling machine, pain relief devices for himself, as well as the idea of interchangeable parts, and "the father of the mass production method” (Whitney Museum). Although he invented a wide variety of machines and devices, the invention of the cotton gin (short for cotton engine) is what he is best known for. In 1793, Eli Whitney came into contact with a widow named Catherine Greene, who was formerly married. to Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. At this time she owned a plantation near Savannah, Georgia; Mulberry grove. At the time of their meeting, Whitney was on his way to his new job as a tutor in South Carolina, but when he realized that his salary would be split in half, he chose to accept Catherine Greene's offer to entrust him with teaching. law in Mulberry Grove. While teaching classes at the plantation, Whitney saw how inefficient cotton production was in the South. During the winter of 1792-93, Eli Whitney spent his time developing a plan to improve cotton production. By the spring of 1793, he had completed his invention of the cotton gin. Before the invention of the cotton gin, cotton processing had to be done by manual labor. This meant that slaves, both men and women, had to spend hours hand-picking the seeds from cotton, then spinning it into cloth. “Sorting a single terracotta 'dot'...the middle of the paper...the fiber and packing it into bales before it reaches the textile mill” (History of Cotton Ginning). There are many types of cotton, which is why different cotton gins are used. Some use both saw and roller gins, but others may only use one depending on the cotton. Roller gin is used when cotton fiber is easily damaged by saw gin. As once said: “It would not have been possible to establish the cotton industry in the South without this apparatus” (Biography). Eli Whitney helped propel cotton to the top of the cash crop. By inventing such an effective method, he significantly improved cotton production. “The invention of the cotton gin was one of the many inventions of the Industrial Revolution” (Wilmore). Today, cotton gins can be found all over the United States; So this shows that Whitney's invention truly had an impact on our society.
