“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not not be violated. » These words have been forgotten as individuals, including former U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, attempt to remove the individual aspect of the Second Amendment. Gun control is not effective because it has not been shown to actually reduce gun-related crimes. However, if more Americans purchased a gun, were trained in its use, and carried it, gun violence would begin to decline. The Second Amendment was incorporated under the Fourteenth in the landmark case McDonald v. Chicago. According to the Fourteenth Amendment, “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.” » Before that, the city of Chicago violated Otis McDonald's rights by mandating gun registration and making handguns illegal. McDonald's house was broken into five times. He legally owned shotguns, but felt the shooting was too wild to fry at home. Therefore, McDonald, a law-abiding citizen, was unable to purchase a handgun for protection in the home, violating castle law, to defend himself against an intruder, without any legal/prosecution liability for the consequences of the force used. This court case established a standard that states must uphold the Second Amendment, strengthening the right of law-abiding citizens to carry a firearm and defend themselves. Washington DC was considered by many to be the American ideal until the controversial gun control law of 1975 that forced citizens to have their weapons unloaded, disassembled or locked.
